" An artist is somebody who produces
things that people don't need to have".

Well, before you agree or disagree, read this. . .
Two oil paintings left last year in an Etobicoke Goodwill bin sold at an auction recently for close to $160,000, more than their combined high-end presale estimate. Some artist do produce things that people like to keep.
The paintings, both completed in 1895 by Peruvian-European master Federico del Campo, were bought over the telephone by an unidentified European collector. The bidder outbidded at least nine other bidders, including a California collector, also on the phone, who just failed to surpass the successful hammer prices of $68,000 and $66,000.
The unexpected windfall, one of the largest donations in Goodwill history, is being earmarked for REACH (Real Employment to Achieve Community Health), an in-house job-training and work-access program.
Two years ago, a British collector purchased an 1891 del Campo from a U.S. auctioneer for close to $300,000 (U.S.).
