The Impossible Dream

Our office lottery pool has been on for 2 years now. We've never won anything substantial except for free tickets and petty cash so petty, it is embarrassing to mention. I calculated how much I have spent (or lost) in the 2 years I've joined and it adds up to almost $120. Wow, that would have been a nice pair of Aldo shoes.

I sometimes have this nagging feeling of wanting to stop but, another voice inside of me whispers "what if they win on the month that you stop?" So, out my money goes and the cycle continues.

It is a never ending tug of war. To dream and not know when to wake up. When is the best time to wake up?

  1. You wake up everytime you realize that you might really not win at all... but what the heck, dreaming makes these things yours.

  2. We also do the same thing at work. But only when the price money is really huge. Even my supervisor is in on this. You know there's always the 'what if' if you don't join the group. So dream on.

  3. Yes, to dream and dream. We always make fun of the one who keeps the money - whenever he goes on vacation - we tease him with "Is it our money?". Good thing he is not pikon.

  4. My sister-in-law, while she was still employed at AMEX in Markham, used to put in a dollar a week into a lottery pool with her office mates. Few months passed by and her hope for hitting a winning number started to thin out. She skipped a couple of weeks... couldn't care less...then resumed again; off and on. Before too long, that Friday when she didn't bother to give a dollar, the group won some $$$$ which could have entitled her a little over $5,000 share (hu!hu!hu!). When asked why she didn't give her dollar that week... " I forgot to bring my purse that day", she quipped. Hmmm...she could have... she should have... ah! never mind... I just bit my tongue...do not add insult to injury.
