What Camera Should I Buy?

A few times friends ask me something about photography. First things first : I am no authority. My views, thoughts, advise are all based on my own hit-and-miss learning experience. Nevertheless, I am flattered and still give my 2 cents worth.

Most Common Question : What camera should I get?

My usual answer : It depends on a lot of things.

Why do you want a camera? To photograph your kids and family? To go out and explore nature, cover concerts and sporting events, try photojournalism?
If the intention is to record family events and growing up years, then a simple point and shoot will do. If you plan to learn more about photography then a starter DSLR would be good. If you are kind of in between - may or may not pursue the hobby - still a starter DSLR would be good enough. The DLSR nowadays have auto settings and scene modes which you can use forever.

Does carrying heavy equipment and accessories bother you? If aside from carrying baby things you will be lugging around camera equipment and this bothers you - then a point and shoot is good enough. With DSLRs, you can change lenses and there are other accessories you might want to bring along with you - including a tripod. I'm not saying having DSLRs equals lots of accessories but it could lead to that.

Finally, are you willing spend time learning about your camera and photography? If you do - then a decent DSLR might be good for you. Even if finding out later on that photography is not for you - then you have a good camera. If you find out also that it is something you enjoy - then the starter DSLR would have been a good investment.

So, there is really no correct answer - just correct preferences. What works for one - may not work for the other. At the end, it is always the buyers choice. Good luck!
