The Soloist is not one of those blockbuster, highly advertised commercial films. Sure, Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx starred, but it did not catch the moviegoers' attention. Maybe for a reason.
The movie revolves around Nathaniel Ayers, a cello prodigy who developed a mental illness while in Juilliard School and his "god" Steve Lopez, an LA Times columnist. It was a touching movie that deserves more interest than it got. The choice of Downey and Foxx for the roles were perfect. Their performances confirmed just how good they were.
There are times when we don't need to sing along with the music, all we need to do is listen. In the movie, Lopez had the intention of changing Ayers -- a person who was comfortable where he was. Ayers didn't need anybody to help him, all he wanted was Lopez to be there and be a friend.
I think the movie was amazing. A far cry from those prodigy stories, those stories of struggling artists who became victors in the end, movies full of big, happy moments. This one was different. Maybe because this one is true.
Like any classical masterpiece, The Soloist may not be appreciated by everyone -- but we need to hear masterpieces once in a while.
I'll keep this mind the next time I pick-up a DVD. Been eyeing this movie when it was in the theatres. Thanks for the recommendation
