Never Say Nixon

As I’ve written before, politics is not one of my faves. It has never interested me. Well, never say never. With apprehension and non-interest, I went to watch Frost/Nixon only because hubby wanted to. Frost/Nixon is that historical drama film which dramatizes the 1977 televised Frost/Nixon interviews.

My thoughts : What would be interesting in an interview of an impeached president?; Why would I watch a film about an event I didn’t know a lot about? Anyway, I changed my mind after the movie.

Why?

It is a well crafted screenplay -- it is almost like a thriller. For those like me who would rather watch a duel without blood and gore – this is our movie. Excitement does not only happen in boxing rings.

Dream big and then be prepared for it. Frost had a great idea, he thought it was going to be easy, but he underestimated everything. No funds, no investors and worst of all underestimating his opponent.

An unusual battle for credibility. I found the the battle of wits between the camps very interesting. Both Frost and Nixon were on the redemption path. Frost whose shows were recently canceled while Nixon wanted to atone for his errors.

Accepting defeat.
The very last part of the interviews showed a defeated Nixon. Just like everyone else who must have witnessed the real Frost/Nixon interviews, it was touching. It is not easy to accept your mistakes when you held the highest office of the land. It is not easy to say you were wrong in your decisions in front of people who gave you such power. Such a sad moment.

A winner. Frost won in the final duel, but I feel he will be haunted all his life too. Making a once powerful man bow down his head and be disgraced is not something to be proud of.

A possible winner. Frank Langella’s performance as Nixon.

Finally, how much do you know about the Watergate Scandal?

  1. Read some Time/Newsweek articles regarding this after it unfolded. It was a disgrace.

  3. Bilib ko nimo, Em. I always read your blogs and I enjoy them. I do it as part of my winding down before bedtime, therefore it catches the tail- end of my energy(eyes are not too tired but fingers are)... that's why I don't post comments all the time. I admire you for constantly coming up with various interests/topics. They are thought-provoking, eye-opener, confirming some similar habits or beliefs, etc... I won't be surprised if, one of these days, you will be offered a Magazine/Paper Columnist position. Don't let me be the last to know, OK?

    T of T
