How can you mother and love someone who did not come from you? who is not of your color? who looks like a monster? How can you love somebody who is different? What will you do for love?
LOVE is my take on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
The Film
One of the best I have seen -- such beautiful story. True it was more than 2 hours – but for such an interesting life (even in fiction) – there was nothing I would cut short. It was so artfully done -- you don't even feel the time.
Casting
From Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, and Taranji Henson – they were all perfectly chosen. Brad and Cate have this on screen chemistry that makes you look and stare and feel. They look so good together – I almost forgot Angelina ever existed.
Acting
Sorry Brad Pitt fans, but I was not taken by Brad’s acting here. There was not much to act really – the make up did most of it. For me, it was Taranji (as Queenie) who gave the best performance in the film. So natural, so fresh, so real. Cate? well, Cate Blanchett is Cate Blanchett. I have never seen her give a so-so performance in any film -- this one is no different. (and does she ever eat? my, that lean, skinny body I dream of).
Photography
It took my breath away – simply stunning.
Director
This was my second film from director David Fincher and I say he did a superb job. Maybe he should move to films like this instead of the dark movies he used to do. If he wins the Oscar – he truly earned it.
Others
I love how they did the make up, the seamless editing done to come up with an almost flawless film, even the research for costume and art design. No wonder it got nominations for adapted screenplay, in editing, in make-up, art direction, and costume design. So well done. I don’t agree so much for musical score and sound mixing though.
A few notes:
Does Benjamin have to ride that bike like always ? was it for a commercial value ? added for the fans? for Brad Pitt? If I have not read about why they had to film it in New Orleans – I really would have said they made the film for Brad Pitt.
And the rain of buttons for the Paramount and Warner Brothers logo? Wasn't that striking? Just love it.
After watching the movie, i got so curious, I read the original short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald. No offense meant to Mr. Fitzgerald, but the movie is so much better -- thanks to writer Eric Roth (who also penned Forrest Gump).
If you have not watched the movie -- be sure to bring Kleenex (and someone you love).
I totally agree about the whole Brad Pitt not having to act much but didn't look sooo good when he came to the ballet studio when he was a teenager?
ReplyDeleteBetween this movie and Slumdog, tita, who do you want to win 'best picture' for the oscars?
Ting,
ReplyDeleteYES! Brad looked so good in that part -- it amazed me too. Making someone old is easy with make-up, but to look like 17?
My best picture bet is this movie. I will write about MILK next week.
Definitely Slumdog Millionaire to win the Oscar. Talking about chemistry, have you seen Babel? Brad & Cate were also in that movie. I agree Milk is also a must see. Sean Penn? One of the best.
