I use to buy pirated DVDs. USE TO BUY, but I no longer do. This change came simply because . .
1) I have gone through the making of a short film. In that short experience, I met several hard working people who are part of the industry. Make up artists, cleaners, gaffers, grips. Any movie (big or low budget) spends time, money and resources in making them. If the movie does not make money because everyone buys the pirated copy -- the movie making industry will die. Nobody would want to produce movies anymore. It is not the Daniel Craigs and the Tom Cruises who worries me - but the lowly industry folks. Someone like D - someday.
2) Only the unscrupulous gain when you buy those DVDs. One who owns a DVD burner, gets hold of a movie copy and makes hundreds of copies to sell. All money goes to his pockets, none for the government and none for those who worked hard making those movies. Plainly said, that is stealing. Are they the kind of people you like to continue supporting?
3) Those DVDs are a health hazard and a waste of money. Try watching a pirated DVD and get distracted by the shadows of people standing up. Torture your eyes with those bad copies that are so dark. Lastly, learn lip reading the hard way when your pirated copy has the wrong subtitles. Having experienced all these, I ended up renting the originals after a frustrating night.
So, what's on your DVD?
This is my 2nd post to the series "Issues I Stand For".
Never did it, never thought of it.
ReplyDeleteIt is different here Au, there are a lot of stores selling these DVDs. There are even 2 malls that specialize in this. Their buyers are not only Filipinos -- but all races. Imagine, "Mama Mia" sold at $2. All movies are at $2! Including TV series and concerts. Sometimes they have the movie before it is shown in the moviehouses. Grabe! The police comes to raid one day and then after 2 days they are back selling again...
ReplyDeletep.s. D loves you Tita Au! You are now one of his favorite Tita!
Mora diay sa Pinas. And anyway you watch a movie to relax. How can you relax when what you're watching is not clear. Instead we sometimes buy used DVDs. Not stealing.
ReplyDeleteHAHAHA I remember my son downloaded a scary movie a long time ago, and we sat down to watch it. The most climactic part of the movie, someone in the theatre gets up and walks across the screen. We laughed, it ruined the movie LOL.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, great post. I don't buy pirated movies, simply because I don't buy movies. I'd rather rent them or go to the theatre.
Jamaica,
ReplyDeleteThat "scary movie turned comedy" story is one for the books. That would have made a great blog post too!
