Cold, Chilling and a Reminder

Last Friday, part of West Toronto had a power outage affecting about 22,000 Toronto Hydro customers who lost electricity and power. Imagine this on one of the coldest night in winter.

Lately also Toronto has been in extreme cold weather alert. Extreme cold weather alert is issued when the
  • temperatures fall below -15° Celsius
  • weather conditions are severe enough to warrant alerting the community to the risks involved with prolonged exposure to the outdoors (blizzard, wind chill warning)
Even the heater is not much help. So, candles, candles, candles everywhere. . .

But these cold alerts does not deter us from partying. Had an early birthday celebration last Saturday with friends. It was the usual gang with the usual chatter and the usual Filipino food.

It does not need a power outage, a failing heater, or a snowed-in car (after a party) to make us check our Emergency Kits. It is a must for every family -- winter or not, wherever you are. Some basic things that are a must in these Emergency Kits are flashlights, batteries, radio, petty cash, blankets, extra clothing, basic medication, water, some food like biscuits on canned items, candles, matches, phone numbers, and hand sanitizers.

I am not paranoid, just playing safe. I hope you do too.

  1. Not being paranoid, just being prepared for an emergency. This reminds me that soon the hurricane season will be here. And yes, you had an early birthday celebration.
