Art Gallery of Ontario - Masterpiece

And so I finally came face to face with this masterpiece. "Massacre of the Innocents" by Peter Paul Rubens in 1611-1612 based on the Gospel of Matthew. This is the first of the 2 that Rubens painted and was considered lost for a while until it resurfaced and was sold in a Sotheby's auction to Canadian collector Kenneth Thomson ($117M).

The painting measures 142 x 182 cm and is the centerpiece of the Thomson collection at the Art Gallery of Ontario. It is a horrific scene but I did not look at the painting that way. I admired how Rubens imagined the event to be and how he had translated this through his brush and hands.

One must look at it for real to admire. No photo can do justice to any masterpiece.
