This is your typical summer romance story, this time between an army sergeant(John) and a college student(Savannah). The romance of course is interrupted by John's going back to the army and Savannah going back to school.
When 9/11 came, John had to extend his service for love of county, Savannah finds it her duty to become wife of a friend who has an autistic son.
Really predictable with nothing much new. The sub-plot of relationships however was kind of interesting - John's with this father and Savannah's with his friend Tim.
The angle which really touched me in this story is not the romance. It was the sacrifice of people in the military to serve the country (any country). I have always taken for granted people in uniform. Somehow I have always thought they are of different breed - but in this movie I realized they are human too. They have sick families needing care, waiting lovers, life put on hold - yet for them the show must go on.
Dear John is from Nicholas Sparks so expect this to be for the hopeless romantic. Read the book for light reading or see the movie when you need a little escape.
