Are You Vain?

I have always liked Carly Simon's song "You're So Vain". This 1972 classic is getting a revival since 1) an acoustic version was released last year and 2) singer/songwriter Carly Simon recently launched a competition seeking a video to accompany the song.

You're so vain
You probably think
this song is about you

You're so vain

I'll bet you think
this song is about you

Don't you? Don't you?

What is even more intriguing is that despite it's popularity, Simon refused to name the person she is referring to in this song. Several guesses have been made to the self-absorbed lover who

walks into the party,
like you were walking onto a yacht

You had one eye in the mirror
As you watched yourself gavotte,
And all the girls dreamed
that they'd be your partner

They'd be your partner, and
...

Carly Simon did give up the name of who she wrote the song about. It was said that in a charity auction in Los Angeles the bid went for $1 million. The procedure for the great secret to be given away involved lawyers, contracts and all sorts of clauses, until Carly actually whispered into the highest bidders ear.

Now, who's vain?
