TIFF '09 Day 1 - Year of the Carnivore

Year of the Carnivore does not have anything to do with flesh eating animals, but more on human relationships. The dynamics of being a prey or a predator in the game of love.

The movie turned out to be a romantic comedy but not in the likes of The Proposal or The Ugly Truth. There is nothing tender nor mushy or cheesy romance in here, less of those scripted Hollywood chick flick. This one is real.

This is Lee's first feature and what better subject than one she knows too well, but knows so little about. When asked during the Q & A, what made her write and direct the film, Sook Yin Lee said, she too was ignorant and clueless in love and in relating, even up to now. The movie is not a documentary she said, but most of them were based on real life (again, not all hers).

I am starting to be a Sook-Yin Lee fan. A filmmaker who is still grounded, a bit adventurous but someone you can feel safe with.

A good one.
